10 Stocking Stuffers for Kids

10 Stocking Stuffers for Kids

Stockings for kids are the easiest and hardest gift to shop for at the same time. They want everything, but the things that actually get played with after Christmas Day are a specific category. Here’s the list of small gifts I’ve watched succeed — across nieces, nephews, friends’ kids, and many holiday seasons.

What works in a kid’s stocking

The winning formula: a mix of one thing they’ll obsess over, one thing they need, one thing that’s a treat, and one or two small surprises. Avoid: anything that requires a lot of parental setup on Christmas morning, anything with very small pieces if there’s a baby in the house, and anything that makes loud noise after 8 PM (your parental friends will thank you).

The list

Things they’ll actually play with

  • Magnatiles or magnetic tiles, small starter set. The most durable toy investment of all time. Sets up endless play.
  • A small Lego set, age-appropriate. A 100-200-piece set is the stocking sweet spot.
  • Crayola Twistables or a quality marker set. Art supplies get used. Cheap ones don’t.
  • A deck of card games. UNO, Sleeping Queens, Sushi Go — depending on age.

Useful and surprising

  • A small flashlight or headlamp. Kids love having “their own” tool. Black Diamond makes kid-sized ones.
  • A nice water bottle in their favorite color. Hydro Flask kids, Klean Kanteen, or a Yeti junior.
  • Stickers — sticker sheets, sticker books. Underrated. Always a hit.

Treats and surprises

  • A small Lego mini-figure or surprise blind bag. Built for the stocking format.
  • Quality chocolate or specialty candy. Better than a giant bag of chocolate coins — one really nice thing.
  • A book they’ll actually read. Match it to their current obsession.

For the older kid

  • A subscription to a magazine they’d love. Nat Geo Kids, Cricket, or coding magazines.
  • A gift card to their favorite small store. Empowering them to choose feels great when they’re old enough to appreciate it.

What to skip

Anything with hundreds of small pieces. Anything battery-operated that makes noise. “Gag” gifts. Branded character toys they’ll forget by January.
